How to become Food Sustainable -

….Start small - and grow….

Food Starter Club

It would be great if EVERYONE in your Family or Community were Eager to Grow Their Own Food! But usually you have to start small and “grow the idea” at the same time as you personally, begin to grow your own food.

Talk to 2-3 others and see if you can organize a Food Starter Club. Meet regularly to plan your growing season, while also planning Community events inviting others to see what you are doing - and learn of your Food Sustainable Goals.

Make a Commitment & Plan Your Time:

  1. Ask Your Family & Starter Club group for their Commitment to growing, harvesting, storing & eating all (most all) of your own food each year.

  2. Plan for Community Food Time: Ask each Family/Community member to Commit time each week to complete planned Food Sustainability tasks. Organize tasks in small groups builds community and makes this commitment more rewarding & fun!

  3. Spread the Word! Invite your neighbors & Family to a pot-luck meal & food community meeting. Create a shared vision. Ask for shared commitment. List next steps.

Local Resources - Local Creativity - Local Control

No matter how small or large your community - collectively, each community already possesses the common sense & creativity to organize your locally unique Food Sustainability Plan. Each Community will have its own unique resources of: people, experience & access to physical infrastructure which can be used to create a plan which works for your community.

Small Communities/Towns/Townships - Natural FoodSheds & WaterSheds - Large Cities/Neighborhoods, School Districts

Food Communities will vary in size - in some situations - small will make more sense - in others - larger will work for them. Communities may differ in choice of foods to grow, in harvest & storage methods. Some may begin by committing to grow 1-2 food items, others may have the ability to grow 5-6 or 10 or more food items.

The Important thing is: Get Started!!! And grow from there.

You can Do This!
